Involve local people in rehabilitation: CPI

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPUR, JAN. 9. The Communist Party of India (CPI), State Secretary, R. Nallakannu, today urged the State Government to involve prominent local people in the fishing villages, besides representatives from political parties and local bodies, in the rehabilitation process to ensure that assistance reached the tsunami-affected people.

Rescue operations in the tsunami-hit areas had finished and rehabilitation work had begun, he told reporters at Avinashi, near here. There was a "chance" of misuse of funds and materials as huge sums were involved, he said.

He appealed to the authorities to provide monetary and other relief to the affected in the presence of local elders, who knew the magnitude of the loss and also the affected persons well.

Mr. Nallakannu clarified that he was making the request, not out of any political motive, but with the sole intention that the relief should reach the genuine cases. He requested the Government to deposit the relief amount in a joint account of parents who lost their children.

Warning system

He appealed to the State Government to install an earthquake warning system in Coimbatore. The public was afraid as geologists considered the district earthquake-prone. A resolution was passed at the 19th conference of CPI's Coimbatore district unit at Avinashi in this regard.

The other resolutions included a plea to the Centre and State Governments to provide infrastructure on par with international standards in Tirupur, requesting the State Government to implement the long-pending Athikadavu-Avinashi water supply project and provide amenities to unapproved layouts.
