Generator emitting smoke

Sir, — A kerosene generator is used inside the Hampanakatta Post Office, Milagres building, whenever the electricity goes off. There is no provision for the smoke from the generator to escape, which makes the post office suffocating. Since the space is limited, alternative arrangements have to be made so that people visiting the post office are not affected by the smoke from the generator.

Bus service required

Sir, — Bhatkal is a town that is connected to almost all major cities. However, there is no bus service from Bhatkal to Chennai via Bangalore. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation may either extend the Bhatkal-Bangalore Raj Hamsa Luxury service to Chennai or introduce a bus to Chennai from Bhatkal.

Kamal Naik,

Bhatkal.

Infrastructure needed

Sir, — I am visiting Bangalore (and India) for the first time and am struck by the contrasts of the beautiful city and India's wonderful culture. I wish that the authorities will bestow more attention on infrastructure and road traffic.

The pollution levels are high and the pavements are either crumbling or uneven.

A few days ago, I read an article about the rape of a daughter by a father and, as a police officer in the U.K., I was horrified to hear that the police refused to investigate unless they were given money.

The matter should be investigated and the officers arrested and dismissed.

Richard J. Douce,

Bangalore.

Vehicle holiday

Sir, — It was suggested that one month holiday for registering new vehicles will reduce traffic congestion. This may not help, as the backlog of registration will only increase work in the next few months. A better way of reducing traffic flow will be to give holiday for the vehicles in use. Each day, the vehicle whose registration number ends with a particular digit should not be allowed on the roads. On the first of the month, vehicles with registration number ending with one, on the second, vehicles with numbers ending with two and so on should not be allowed on the roads. Thus, one tenth of the vehicles will be out of circulation each day. The experiment may be tried for a month and continued if successful.

P.J. Bagilthaya,

Neglected

Sir, — We appreciate and congratulate the Chief Minister in forming the Cabinet by including people from several minority communities. But it is unfortunate and regrettable that not even a single Christian leader has been considered and offered a Ministerial job. The Christian community should be recognised for its services to the State by giving representation to it in all the administrative wings of the Government.

G.T. Rajan,

Bangalore.

Bus stops

Sir, — While the increase in the frequency in many routes with buses that have more capacity is appreciated, the minor route area bus stops with no indication boards of route numbers require the attention of the authorities of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

There are two bus shelters on the E.S.I Road for buses going towards First Block and beyond and also towards Malleshwaram circle and beyond. But the bus drivers ignore the new shelters and stop the buses at the same stop as before. This causes the buses to stop behind one another. Senior citizens and women find it difficult to locate the correct bus in a short time.

Interestingly, though there is only one shelter on the opposite side, buses bound for K.R. Market, Majestic, and Vijaynagar stop in three different places to the satisfaction of the commuters.

I urge the authorities concerned to instruct the drivers to use the second shelter.

P.G. Subramaniam,

Bangalore.
