This Day That Age
The closing down to-day (January 10) of the Ministry of States and the merger of its residuary work with the Ministry of Home Affairs marks the end of a long chapter which began more than two centuries ago with the establishment of treaty relations between the East India Company and various Indian principalities. On the passing of the Independence Act in 1947 and the lapse of British paramountcy over the Indian Princes, the Crown Representative's Department could no longer continue. The need for a Department of the Government of India to regulate their dealings with the Indian Princes was obvious and the States Ministry was created in July 1947. The achievements of the Ministry under its first Minister, Sardar Patel, and its Secretary, Mr. V.P. Menon, will go down in Indian history as events of the highest importance unifying the whole of India.
