LIBREVILLE (GABON), JAN. 10. A dozen African heads of state met in Gabon's capital on Monday in the latest bid to help resolve conflicts threatening stability on the continent, including Congo, Ivory Coast and Sudan's Darfur region. The leaders met in Libreville under the auspices of the 52-nation African Union's Peace and Security Council. Key among attendees was the Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who held talks on Sunday in Khartoum with Omar el-Bashir of Sudan, which officially ended its 21-year conflict with southern rebels on Sunday. Mr. Obasanjo, who chairs the African Union, also travelled to Sudan's Darfur region, meeting A.U. troops monitoring a truce there between rebels and Government forces.
