ISLAMABAD, JAN. 10. For the third consecutive day, there were reports of intensive rocket attacks on Sui, the largest gas field of Pakistan, by suspected Baloch "nationalists" disrupting gas supply to Sindh province. The rain of rockets on the field is so intense that Pakistan Petroleum Ltd (PPL) was finding it difficult to infuse confidence among its workers to repair the damage and restore supply. According to reports in the local media, more than 200 rockets were fired at Sui on Friday and Saturday and security forces were engaged in fighting the attackers throughout today. Two civilians have been killed and two wounded, including a policeman in the incidents. The Sui field's average gas output is about 1.0 billion cubic feet per day almost 45 per cent of Pakistan's total natural gas production. The area, some 400 km north of Karachi, has long been a hotbed of unrest with unidentified persons claiming to be Baloch nationalists engaged in sporadic acts of violence. They contend that the province has long been neglected by the Centre and the new mega projects would further "colonise it". It is immediately not clear what the provocation for the latest attacks is. The chief of one of the regional parties, Nawab Bugti, has hinted that the latest unrest could be related to the alleged rape of a lady doctor. Taking to mediapersons in Dera Bugti on Sunday, he said: "Without the consent and goodwill of the Baloch people, no one can take the gas pipeline to India."
