R-Day celebration

Sir, — Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that the Republic Day parade is not a festivity but an observance of a national day (Jan. 10). But is it proper to showcase our advancement in various fields when everything proved futile two weeks ago? On January 26, the nation should hold special prayer services and fund-raising campaigns for the tsunami-affected. Standing by your countrymen at such times is certainly more patriotic.

M. Vishnu Menon,
Thiruvananthapuram

Sir, — What achievements are we going to showcase on Jan. 26? Touts are caught on camera selling `tokens' of rice meant for tsunami victims to black-marketers. A politician threatens the jailer even when the Supreme Court is giving directions to the Government on his case. If we really want to showcase our distinctions, poverty, illiteracy, murder cases pending against the powerful for years ... all these should be included.

Prabhat Bansall,
Hyderabad

Sir, — It is disheartening to read media reports that the rice meant for tsunami victims is being sold in the black market. If this is the fate of rice, what will happen to the huge relief funds? Will the money being collected by various organisations be put to proper use?

Mudassir Sadat,
Chennai
