Rastogi-Kannan pair advances

MUMBAI, JAN. 10 . Karan Rastogi, partnering Kamala Kannan, took the initiative in carving out a 6-4, 6-2 win over the fourth-seeded combine of Sunil Kumar Sipaeya and Vijay Kannan to make the second round of the doubles in the $15,000 ITF Men's Futures tennis tournament, sponsored by the MSLTA here today.

After this showing against experienced opponents, Rastogi will be watched with renewed interest by rivals.

The British duo of David Sherwood and Michael Ouvarov defeated Simon Gruel (Germany) and Dekel Valtzer (Israel) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a 90-minute encounter — the longest match of the day.

Five Indians made the grade in the singles, along with 296th ranked Gruel, who occupies the number two spot in the main draw after defeating Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 6-0, 6-4 in the final qualifying round. Russian Andrei Stoliarov is another qualifier ranked high enough (442) to be among the seeds.

Ajay Ramaswami, Vinod Sridhar, Sanam Singh, Vivek Shokeen and Amod Wakalkar too advanced to the 32-player draw.

Prakash Amritraj (ranked 340), given a wildcard into the main draw, is the highest Indian seed at number three. Stephen Amritraj, Aditya Madkekar and Vishal Uppal are the other wildcards. Briton David Sherwood (289) is the top seeded, while Harsh Mankad (fifth seed) and Sipaeya (sixth seed) are home grown talents with a reputation to defend.
