Icy winds lash Himachal areas

SHIMLA, JAN. 10. Most parts of Himachal Pradesh reeled under arctic conditions today as the higher reaches in tribal areas and high mountain passes had another spell of moderate snowfall while the mid and lower hills were lashed by strong velocity icy winds accompanied by drizzle. The minimum temperature hovered around the freezing point in Shimla and other mid-hills while people in higher hills suffered sub-zero temperature. The minimum temperature touched the freezing point at Mashobra, 14 kms from here. The State Capital remained engulfed in thick fog and the upper areas of the town had glimpse of snowflakes. Dharamsala and Palampur had drizzle while the sprawling Dhauladhar ranges in Kangra and Churdhar ranges in Sirmaur had intermittent snowfall.

The mighty Rohtang Pass, Kunzam Pass, Saach Pass and Chansel Pass also experienced fresh snowfall creating biting cold wave conditions in Kullu, Kangra and Sangla valleys.

The twin tribal valleys of Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi valley in Chamba reeled under freezing cold wave conditions as the minimum temperature ranged between minus 15 and minus 24 degree Celsius. All natural lakes including the Chandra tal, Suraj tal and Nako lake, springs and rivulets and 70 km stretch of Chandrabhaga river were frozen for past one month due to extreme low temperature, reducing the discharge of water in Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers.

Siliguri: The queen of hills, Darjeeling, received the season's first snowfall in the high altitude areas of Sandakphu, Falut and Tiger hill yesterday, officials said today. It was boom time for the idle Darjeeling-bound vehicles here with the tourists hiring those at any price to reach the hills.
