Literacy vital for tribals' development: Shinde

By Our Correspondent

KOTAPALLY (ADILABAD DT.), JAN. 10. The Andhra Pradesh Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, on Monday stressed improvement of literacy in tribal areas. He said improvement in literacy rate would usher in development in backward tribal areas.

Addressing a gathering at Kotapally mandal headquarter village after inaugurating the local Mandal Parishad Development office, the Governor said low rate of literacy among tribal women had remained a matter of concern for long. He exhorted people to serve society through education.

Talking about the various developmental activities of the State Government, Mr. Shinde said it was trying to improve electrification and farming methods in rural areas.

Referring to the mandal system of local self governance, he said, "Kam asani se aur acche tarah se hota hai" (work gets done easily and in a better manner).

The Governor said poor people are the real owners of resources in a democratic set up. Therefore officials should work for their upliftment, he added.

Aids disbursed

Mr. Shinde distributed aids and appliances to physically challenged persons after inaugurating a free medical camp for them. He gave away 105 appliances. He distributed 1,150 acres of land among 640 landless poor SC families. He also distributed house site pattas to the poor.

Earlier, Mr. Shinde arrived in a helicopter at Kishtampet village in Chennur mandal at 10.25 am amid tight security.

He was welcomed by school children. He inaugurated the new building of the Government Degree College and later the new primary health centre building at Angarajpally.

Sudha Rani, the Joint Collector V. Durga das and a host of officials. A Rs. 1-lakh cheque was handed over to him by the Radha Krishna Educational Society towards relief for tsunami victims.
