ANANTAPUR, JAN. 10. The Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, has observed that lack of awareness among the Dalits is one of the main reasons keeping social evils like discrimination in the name of caste and untouchability alive. Speaking at the second district congress of the Kula Vivaksha Vyathireka Porata Samithi here on Monday he said education would help create and improve awareness among the deprived classes and would also help in driving out social evils from society.
Naxal lure
He called upon the Dalits to give top priority to educating their children. He opined that lack of education and awareness were the reasons behind the majority naxalites being from the Scheduled Castes. They were approaching the naxalites to resolve their problems and were being lured into their fold, he said.
Two-tumbler system
The two-tumbler system was still prevalent in a few mandals of the district. The discriminated lot should complain to the police on such practices so that the police could initiate steps against the unconstitutional systems, Dr. Praveen Kumar said. If there was no response at the lower level the victims of social discrimination could approach the higher authorities of the police in the district headquarters for getting justice, the SP suggested. He mentioned that the police had freed an entire Dalit colony in one of the mandals in the district from the grip of a landlord when the latter tried to vacate the Dalits from the land.
Land distribution
The district president of KVVPS, M. Obulesu, requested the Government to distribute 50 per cent of the land intended to be given away on the coming Republic Day to Dalits. All the mandal-level officials had been directed to visit at least one village a month to learn the problems of social discrimination as per the GO issued by the Government on the recommendations of the Punnaiah Commission to eradicate the evils, the Deputy Director of Social Welfare, Ramanachary, said.
Government schemes
Asking the Dalits to utilise the Government schemes properly the Executive Director of SC Corporation, Anand Naik, stated that more endowments lands would be distributed among the SCs. The district general secretary of KVVPS, H. Venkatesh, the district president of the Andhra Pradesh Vyvasaya Karmika Sangham, O. Nallappa, and others also spoke.
