PONDICHERRY, JAN. 10. The Pattali Makkal Katchi Member of Parliament, M. Ramadass, has urged the Centre to introduce a comprehensive insurance scheme for fishermen. In a release here today, he said that he had suggested this at the all-party meeting convened by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi on January 9. Mr. Ramadass said he had also urged the Centre to place sufficient funds at the disposal of the States so that they could help fishermen purchase boats, catamarans, fishing nets and other material. He said newly-built houses for the fisherfolk should withstand the furyof the sea, while adding that they should be built within 10 months and at sites the fishermen preferred. The Centre should also consider waiver of all loans to the community. Calling for a separate ministry for fisheries, he said planting of saplings and shoring up the coastline with boulders could help check erosion. The Government should extend financial assistance to those coming forward to adopt children orphaned by the catastrophe.
