Lakhera, Rangasamy visit affected villages

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 10. The Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry, M.M. Lakhera, along with the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, the Social Welfare and Industries Minister, M. Chandirakasu, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, the Deputy Speaker, A.V. Subramanian, the local legislators and officials of different departments, today visited the villages in and around Karaikal for identifying sites for housing projects for the tsunami-hit fishermen and their rehabilitation in sites away from the coastal belt.

When contacted over phone, Mr. Lakshminarayanan told The Hindu from Karaikal that as temple land was sufficiently available in Karaikal, the administration decided to take up construction work at the earliest. Agencies such as the Housing and Urban Development Corporation, the Central Public Works Department and National Building Construction Corporation submitted blueprints. With the beneficiaries also accepting sites five hundred metres away from the high tidal limit, work on construction of houses would begin soon.

Phased construction

It was estimated that 4,000 houses would be needed and each fisherman family would be provided a house measuring 400 square feet with basic amenities.

Construction would be done in a phased manner in the Pondicherry and Karaikal regions, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said.

At least one year would be needed to get the dwelling units ready. The Revenue authorities would initiate steps to acquire the temple land next week.

Mr. Lakshminarayanan said funds would not be a constraint. Whoever came forward to contribute to the housing scheme was welcome and the Government would take up construction work making use of funds from whichever source they came, he said.
