VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 10. Faced with complaints about the telecast of obscene programmes in some private TV channels, the Centre is considering a proposal to constitute an independent authority to check such programmes. The modalities for constituting the authority are being worked out and the Government is in favour of minimising the interference of Ministers and other elected representatives in the affairs of the independent body, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, S. Jaipal Reddy, said. Mr. Reddy was here to inaugurate an indoor stadium and a hostel building at the Lakkireddy Balreddy Engineering College at Mylavaram on Monday. In an informal chat with the media at the venue, the Minister said that though Prasad Bharti was an autonomous body, its functioning underwent changes whenever the Government changed. The Prasar Bharti Act should be amended in such a way that there was no interference in its functioning from any quarters irrespective of the Government in power. This apart, the financial resources of the corporation also needed to be strengthened. Explaining the salient features of the Direct-To-Home facility introduced in the country recently, he said under DTH no charge would be collected from the viewers and they would be able to watch most of the free-to-air channels.
FDI in print
To a query on the Foreign Direct Investment in the print media, he said that the Centre would soon convene a meeting of editors and managements of all newspapers.
