Sarpanch at it again

MIRYALAGUDA, JAN.10. About 200 ryots and villagers of Alagadapa created flutter here on Monday by observing a day's fast demanding that the Government implement a "forgotten" scheme, Provisions of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) that was reportedly launched by the President on January 26, 2002.

Led by the village sarpanch, Venepalli Pandurangarao, who had hit headlines by holding a referendum on his performance two years ago, they squatted at the Revenue Divisional Officer's office with the demand.

"Since the gram sabhas are empowered to decide the works to be taken up in villages under the scheme, politicians are not bothered about its implementation,'' Mr. Rao told the protesters. According to Mr. Rao, Miryalaguda is among the 18 towns in 18 districts that were selected to implement the PURA scheme in the first phase. The protesters later submitted a memorandum to revenue officials.
