Big win for Kerala

BANGALORE, JAN. 10. Kerala rattled up an impressive 6-2 victory over Andhra Pradesh in the South Zone cluster of the women's National hockey tournament, which commenced at the Association Hockey stadium here on Monday.

Andhra Pradesh began well taking the lead twice in the match, first in the 10th minute with Marsi scoring and then again in the 24th minute with Alaginee in the thick of things. Kerala notched up its first through Roshini in the 22nd minute.

After the break Kerala was a rejuvenated side and all its moves began to click. Roshini once again levelled the scores four minutes into the second half after which Indhu got into the scoring act. Making full use of a cross from Unnimaya in the 40th minute Indhu had the Andhra goalkeeper leaden-footed while slotting the ball home.

Indhu came up with another fine effort nine minutes later as Kerala effectively controlled the run of play in the second half. Her skipper Vineetha shut off her chances of performing a hat-trick scoring four minutes before the final whistle. Indhu's third goal, however, came a minute before close of play.

In the inaugural match, Tamil Nadu and host Karnataka played out a 2-2 draw. The visitor took the lead in the 16th minute off a clever penalty corner push in. Irfana Begum received a through-the-legs pass, which she slammed in without any difficulty. Karnataka found the going tough till the 41st minute when Veena levelled the scores. The Karnataka girl then had the home side in the lead within three minutes when she tapped the ball into an open goal. Tamil Nadu's Aruna Shanmugha ensured that the points were split with another penalty corner goal ten minutes before closure.

The host plays Kerala in the second match on Tuesday while Tamil Nadu faces off against Andhra in the first match at 2.30 pm.
