NEW DELHI, JAN. 10. Yuki Bhambri made it to the semifinals of the under-14 event in a draw of 128 in the Optus hardcourt tennis tournament that concluded recently in Gosford, New South Wales. Yuki went down to the 10th seeded Joel Andriolo 2-6, 6-7 in the semifinals after accounting for the 8th and 9th seeds, Peter Parian and Christopher Young respectively in straight sets on the way. The Delhi lad beat James Dudsworth 6-4, 7-6 in the quarterfinals and had dropped only seven games in the previous three rounds after a bye in the first round. The other Indian boy, Sriram Balaji lost to the top-seeded Mark Verryth 3-6, 6-4, 1-6 in the third round. He beat Robert Howe 6-1, 6-0 after a bye in the first round. In the girls section, the Indian girls Poojashree Venkatesh and Sweta Kumari Solanki lost in the pre-quarterfinals to Nicha Lertpitaksinchai 6-7, 2-6 and Noelle Nikki Camilla Zoleta 5-7, 3-6 respectively. The duo, however, made it to the finals of the doubles, justifying their second seeding, before losing to the top seeds Olivia Di Sisto and Page Thomas 0-6, 4-6. The four-member Indian under-14 team is in Australia for another tournament along with coach Radhika Tulpule. The Indian players, as part of the 13-member Asian team, are in Melbourne.
