THRISSUR JAN. 10. A disaster management plan is being prepared for the district to push rescue and relief machinery into quick action in case of natural or man-made disasters. Meetings of officials of various departments and representatives of voluntary agencies will be convened on January 17 in different taluk headquarters to work out the details of such action plans to ensure timely and effective intervention during calamities. According to an official press release here, this was decided at a district-level meeting convened by the Collector, K.S. Premachandra Kurup, at the Collectorate today. Steps will be taken for coordination of various departments, such as Revenue, Police, Fire-force, Health, Agriculture, Fisheries, Irrigation, Public Works and Animal Husbandry, the Kerala State Electricity Board and the Kerala Water Authority in the rescue and rehabilitation works. The taluk- level meetings will work out programmes to identify areas where there is a high likelihood of calamities and resources available locally to carry out rescue operations. Subsequently, a district- level meeting will be convened on January 27 to work out a disaster management plan. The Superintendent of Police, T. Vikram; the Additional District Magistrate, P. Rajan; and the Revenue Divisional Officer, C.D. Kuriakose; were among those who attended the meeting.
More than Rs. 30 lakhs have been donated in the district to the Chief Minister's relief fund for tsunami victims.
