CHENNAI, JAN. 10. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, and the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Bibi Jagir Kaur, today called on the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and apprised her of their plan to distribute relief materials to the affected people in the tsunami-hit Nagapattinam district tomorrow. Mr. Badal and Ms. Kaur, who met Ms. Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat, also promised to extend all possible assistance to those affected. They said that they would distribute blankets, pillows, clothes, rice, dal, edible oil, vegetables and medicine, which had been transported from Punjab in 28 bogies . As many as 400 cooks, doctors and nurses from Punjab would provide necessary assistance. The Members of Parliament, S.S. Badal, S.Z. Mann and Varinder Bajwa, were among the SAD leaders present at the meeting. Ms. Jayalalithaa thanked them for their contribution to the relief works.

Meanwhile, 32 persons, including the Public Works Minister, O. Paneerselvam, the Minister for Rural Industries, B. Valarmathi, the industrialist, M.CT. Pethachi, and the Director-General of Police, I.K. Govind, handed over cheques to the tune of Rs. 12.69 crores to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund (CMPRF). Among those who handed over Rs. 25 lakhs and above were Mr. Paneerselvam, on behalf of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation and its employees (Rs. 5.01 crores), Mr. Govind, on behalf of the personnel of the Police Department (Rs. 2.34 crores), D. Karthikeyan, Erode Collector, public contribution (Rs. 1.15 crores), Suresh Krishna, Chairman and Managing Director, Sundaram Fasteners, and S. Dinesh, Executive Director, T.V. Sundaram Iyengar and Sons Limited (Rs. 70 lakhs), A. Vellaiyan, Director, Murugappa Group (Rs. 50 lakhs), Karate R. Thiagarajan, Deputy Mayor, Chennai Corporation (Rs. 37.15 lakhs), Ms. Valarmathi, on behalf of the employees of different State Government undertakings (Rs. 31.05 lakhs), R. Nallathambi on behalf of the Namakkal poultry units (Rs. 30 lakhs), P.S. Jayaraman, Executive Director, Chemplast Sanmar Industry (Rs. 25 lakhs) and executives of Asian Paints (Rs. 25 lakhs).
