By Our Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM, JAN.10. Around 10,200 fishing craft have been completely damaged and 893 boats partly damaged in the December 26 tsunami calamity in the district.

Addressing a joint press conference here this evening, Shantha Sheela Nair, Secretary to Government, Rural Development and Local Administration and J. Radhakrishnan, Collector (who assumed charge today), pointed out that 6,126 boat engines were fully damaged and 341 partly damaged. The damage to fishing nets was also substantial. Ms. Nair said about 12,000 temporary sheds (6,524 built by the Government and 5,629 by private parties, including NGOs) were being constructed at 38 places in the district to accommodate the affected families who would be moved to these sheds by Pongal day. She pointed out that with the recovery of two more highly decomposed bodies today, the toll in the district rose to 6,053. Relief assistance of Rs. 44.52 crores had so far been disbursed to the tsunami affected families in the district by way of compensation.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said those who wanted to adopt the orphaned children could contact the District Social Welfare Officer for the norms and procedure to be followed. Scientists of the Fisheries College, Tuticorin, who had inspected the coastal areas of the district, had stated that it was safe to eat fresh sea fish, he said.

The Collector said all the schools in the district, including the government higher secondary school at Akkaraipettai coastal village in Nagapattinam, started functioning from today but attendance was thin. Books, notebooks and uniforms were being issued free to the students affected by the tsunami.
