Karunakaran back in focus

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 10. The veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran has come back to active politics after a brief period of inactivity that found him in and out of hospital for minor ailments. Known for his sense of timing, Mr. Karunakaran proved that he had not lost form despite the lull in political activism he had been accustomed to.

At a press conference here today, he expressed solidarity with the tsunami victims and those who had come forward to help them. He did not hide his ire at the alleged failure of the Government machinery in reaching relief to the affected people.

"It has been quite a while since I met the press. I have been keeping a low profile, prompting party men to ask questions about my silence," Mr. Karunakaran prefaced his press conference.

"Have you ended your maunvrath ?" reporters asked him.

"I have been accused of talking a lot which led to the ouster of Mr. Antony. I have been generally silent since Mr. Chandy assumed office even though my comments had been sought for from time to time. But today, there is sufficient reasons for my convening this press conference," he said.

Government flayed

Mr. Karunakaran pilloried the Government for the next 45 minutes. At one juncture, someone asked him about the outcome of the Chandy Government's 100-day programme. "Well, a Minister resigned. And the Chief Minister took over the Information Technology Department," he observed wryly. The resignation should have come earlier, though, he added as an after thought.

Asked whether it would be possible for the Chief Minister to carry additional load having taken over the IT Department, Mr. Karunakaran shot back, "the load can be assessed only if one lifts it." At another point, he said undertaking long journeys and issuing statements would not make up for good governance.

Mr. Karunakaran appeared to have completely recovered from his ailments. He was as quick in his reactions as he was fluent. He ended the press conference with a hint that he would be heard more in the coming days and that he would add to the colour of political debate.
