UDUPI, JAN. 10. The Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) is holding talks with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) for a tie-up to extend its activities, especially in emergency relief work in regions affected by natural calamities in different parts of the world. Talking to presspersons here on Saturday, the president of the AMDA, Shigeru Suganami, said that the AMDA, a non-governmental organisation, has been working to eliminate diseases and improve the lot of the deprived classes. The talks with MAHE would centre on working out details of making such an arrangement feasible. Besides popularising the Indian medicine system of Ayurveda in Japan, the talks will also focus on academic exchange between the AMDA and MAHE. Ayurveda has not been recognised in Japan due to an extensive use of metals in Ayurvedic medicines and "lack of basic theory." But the Chinese system of medicine is recognised in Japan. In spite of the fact that Ayurveda is not recognised, it still remains popular in Japan. It is necessary to develop Ayurveda in Japan in phases.
