TUTICORIN, JAN. 10 . Fish caught along the Nagapattinam coast is safe for consumption, said a team of scientists from the Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI), Tuticorin, which today completed its study on the impact of the December 26, 2004 tsunami on the biodiversity and biomass of fisheries resources there. A microbiological analysis of seawater, sediment and fish confirmed that all samples were free from harmful pathogenic micro-organisms, R Santhanam, Dean, told The Hindu . On reports of the zulican virus spreading among the fish species in the affected areas, Dr. Santhanam said, "It's false propaganda". "In an attempt to remove apprehensions, we even established contact with the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia and they too confirmed that the zulican virus does not exist anywhere."
