Major swing in humidity

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 31.7 degree Celsius and a minimum of 17.9 degree Celsius on Monday. Humidity which was 95 per cent in the morning dropped to 64 per cent by evening.

Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Wednesday: groundnut oil - 50, palmolein oil - 39.50 sunflower oil - 50, tamarind (flower variety) - 30 to 40, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 45 to 57, chillies (refrigerated) - 20 to 27, chillies - 12 to14, rice (2716) - 12, rice superfine (samba masoori) 13 to 14, rice sona masoori - 15 to 16, black gram (pottu minapappu) - 18.35 to 21.70, red gram (kandipappu) - 22, red gram (Nagpur) 26.

Quiz contest winners

V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College team won the first prize while Gowtham Degree Collged team came second in the district-level quiz competition, `Prof. Ramachandra Rao Memorial and ICFAI National College Quiz Championship 2005,' held for degree and engineering students on the sidelines of Vijayawada Book Festival.

Over 35 teams from 25 colleges from in and around the city participated. The ICFAI Principal, Y. Sai Krishna, on Monday said awards would be presented to winners by the former Governor of Karnataka, V.S. Rama Devi, at the valedictory of the book festival on January 11.

Laughter Day celebrated

St. John's Public School premises wore a cheerful look on Monday where `World Laughter Day' was celebrated by staff, students and their parents. Several enthusiasts sent the audience into continuous bursts of laughter with their presentations.

The school Principal, Iris Sylvester, stressed on the need to laugh to beat stress and advised children to bring smile on the faces of parents. Students participated in the `longest' and `loudest' laughing competitions.

UDA chief term extended

The Government has extended by three years the term of Chairman of the Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority, which was constituted for a period of one year on June 6, 2004.

The extension was given as per the Urban Development Authority (Hyderabad) Rules as amended in G.O. No. 548.
