BJP condemns junior seer's arrest

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 10. The State unit of the BJP has said that it did not have words to express condemnation against the arrest of Vijayendra Saraswathi within hours of the bail granted by the Supreme Court for the senior seer, Jayendra Saraswathi.

Its vice-president, S.V. Seshagiri Rao, said in a press release that the Jayalalithaa Government acted with vengeance in the matter in a disgraceful manner. It functioned against the spirit of the judgment delivered by the apex court. The police could not convince the court to deny bail to Jayendra Saraswathi despite four months of investigation in the case.

Mr. Rao appealed for the intervention of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to stop the injustice done to Kanchi Peetam.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad today strongly criticised the arrest of Swami Vijayendra Saraswati.

A. Kumara Swamy, joint organising secretary, in a statement issued here, described the arrest as "gross violation of principles of natural justice, illegal and unwarranted".

While demanding that the arrest order be annulled, he warned of an agitation.
