Temperature

TIRUCHI, JAN. 10 . The city today registered a maximum temperature of 30.0 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature is 19.5 degree Celsius.

Woman's

body found

The decomposed body of a 35-year-old woman was found in the Uyyakondan channel here today. The identity of the woman is not yet known.

The body found floating in the channel was removed and kept at the mortuary in the Government Hospital here, the police here said. The Woraiyur police have registered a case.

One killed in motorcycle collision

A two-wheeler rider died after his vehicle collided with another motorcycle near the Paalpannai roundtana on the Chennai bypass road last night.

The police said Srinivasan (28) of Thennur, who was injured, was admitted to the Government Hospital here. But, he succumbed to injuries. The rider of the other motorcycle who was also injured, has been admitted to a private hospital here. The Traffic Investigation (North) Unit is investigating.

Lawyers boycott courts

Lawyers boycotted courts here today, demanding Pongal holidays for the courts in the districts too as in the case of the Madras High Court. The Tiruchi Bar Association at its general body meeting held here recently decided to boycott court works from January 10 to 13.

The lawyers would resume their duty on January 17.

22 held for man's death

A total of 22 persons have been arrested for the death of a 36-year old man, Tamizharasan, who died after he was beaten up by a section of villagers at Puthanampatti in the district on Saturday.

The police here said 11 persons were arrested on Sunday and another 11 today. All the arrested were from Puthanampatti.

Tamizharasan was allegedly hit with sticks by the villagers after he argued in support of his friend Sasikumar, who was called by the villagers in connection with a theft case. Sasikumar, who too was injured after he was allegedly hit by the villagers, was admitted to the Government Hospital here. The Pulivalam police are investigating.

Relief for tsunami victims

The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, a Government of India enterprise, distributed household stainless steel utensils and kerosene stoves worth over Rs.2.25 lakhs to tsunami victims of Kottayimedu, Chinna Kottayimedu and Madavamedu in Sirkazhi taluk in Nagapattinam district yesterday. The Additional General, Powergrid, C. S. Tomar, distributed the assistance in the presence of the Chief Manager, B. Gopalan.

The members of the Tiruchi District Pensioners' Association donated Rs. 30,000 towards the Chief Minister's Tsunami Relief Fund. A delegation of the association, led by its president, G. Palaniandi, handed over the cheque to the Collector, V. Pandian today.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 79.56 feet today. The inflow was 354 cusecs and the discharge 12,000 cusecs.
