This Day That Age
The U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, and the Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai, held their fourth and final meeting in Peking on January 10 on the question of releasing the U.N. war prisoners. In a joint communiqué made available both at the U.N. headquarters and in Peking, they said that during the talks reference had been made to "questions pertinent to the relaxation of world tension. We feel that these talks have been useful and we hope to be able to continue the contact established in these meetings." No reference was made to the eleven American airmen imprisoned by the Chinese or to the United Nations personnel detained since the Korean War. Mr. Hammarskjoeld had come to Peking to seek the men's release at the request of the U.N. General Assembly.
