Exports cross $53 b in 9 months

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 11. India's exports are estimated to have crossed $53 billion in the nine months of the current financial year 2004-05, recording a growth rate of over 23 per cent during this period.

The surge in exports is continuing despite appreciation of the rupee and a growth of over 20 per cent is being sustained, the Government said indicating that detailed trade data based on the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence andStatistics (DGCI&S) provisional figures would be available tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Union Commerce Minister, Kamal Nath, has announced an export target of $88 billion for 2005-06. Now the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is interacting with the export promotion councils and commodity boards concerned to finalise the targets sector-wise and commodity-wise for each of the next four years. Strategies to unlock the potential of agricultural exports from India would also be worked out.
