SYDNEY, JAN. 11. French Open champion Anastasia Myskina was knocked out of the Medibank Sydney International on Tuesday, losing 6-1, 6-3 to qualifier Peng Shuai of China in a second round match. The second-seeded Myskina had complained of playing too much tennis after winning three matches at last week's Hopman Cup. She also questioned whether entering the Sydney event, her first outdoor match of the season, was a wise decision leading up to the Australian Open. ``I've been practicing indoors because in Perth it was really windy,'' Myskina said. ``Today was my first match outside, and it was really, really tough for me. It was really hot and a bit windy.'' Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport, coming off a bye in the first round and returning from a knee problem that forced her out of last week's Hopman Cup, eased into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nathalie Dechy of France.
Hewitt has it easy
In men's play, top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt easily advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Karol Beck of Slovakia and second-seeded Carlos Moya winner at Chennai on the weekend went out to Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Moya won the first set and was up a break in the second before fatigue set in. ``Since I played the final in India, I didn't have much time to recover,'' he said. ``I had my chances in the second set, and then in the third I felt my legs were heavy. ``It doesn't matter that I won two days ago, it's still disappointing.'' Moya, who arrived in Sydney late on Monday, said he would use his extra time preparing for next week's Australian Open.
Nadal withdraws
In Auckland, defending champion Dominik Hrbaty reached the second round of the Heineken Open on Tuesday when Rafael Nadal withdrew from their first round match with chest pains. Nadal, 18, complained of pains during the extended first set of a match between the 2004 Auckland finalists. Hrbaty took the set 6-3 and Nadal sought medical advice before choosing to retire.
