Hurdles in way of gauge conversion cleared: MLC

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, JAN. 11. B.R. Gurudev, MLC, has said that the Union Minsiter for Railways, Lalu Prasad, has cleared hurdles in the way of completion of gauge conversion work between Sakleshpur and Mangalore.

He appreciated the efforts of Hassan MP and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, in the endeavour.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said that the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had objected to the gauge conversion in the Western Ghats citing environmental reasons.

The Ministry was apprehensive over the increase in chances of forest fire with the gauge conversion.

However, Mr. Deve Gowda succeeded in convincing the Railway Minister on the need to complete the project by allaying apprehensions of forest fires, he said. Regretting the failure of the Ministry in allocating funds required for the completion of the project, he said that though the project needed at least Rs. 55 crores, the allocation was only Rs. 8 crores.

Mr. Gurudev also appreciated the efforts made by Mr. Deve Gowda in the integrated development of the district over the last six months.

Opposed

To a query on the proposed Gundia High Head Scheme of Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) in Sakleshpur taluk, he said that he would oppose the power project, as it would be detrimental to the eco-sensitive Western Ghats.

Reacting to a statement made by the Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, on the implementation of Halebeed-Madihalli Lift Irrigation Scheme, he said that the Minister was misguiding people by making false promises.

The formation of the scheme was against the judgement of Cauvery tribunal, he added.
