Abbas offers Israel "hand of peace"

By Atul Aneja

MANAMA, JAN. 11. A day after recording a landslide victory in Sunday's presidential elections, Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has offered "the hand of peace" to Israel. "We are ready for peace, peace based on justice. We hope that their [Israel's] response will be positive," he said. Mr. Abbas also called for the resumption of talks based on the internationally backed road map for peace in West Asia.

Israeli and key international leaders were quick to establish first hand contact with Mr. Abbas. Israeli President, Moshe Katsav, telephoned Mr. Abbas, congratulated him on his election victory, and expressed the hope for further reconciliation. He reportedly also told Mr. Abbas that he would be happy to hold talks with him after his meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, had concluded. The new Israeli Vice-Prime Minister, Shimon Peres, also called Mr. Abbas and congratulated him. "Israel will do all it can to help the Palestinians establish a democratic government, so we can live in peace as two democracies side by side," Mr. Peres said.

Besides, Mr. Sharon's aide, Dov Weisglass, was in contact with the Palestinian Finance Minister, Salam Fayyad. With the revival of the stalled West Asia peace process on the agenda, the E.U. Foreign Minister, Javier Solana, has met Mr. Abbas. Talks were also held with the visiting U.S. Senator, John Kerry, in Ramallah. The U.S. President, George W. Bush, meanwhile, telephoned Mr. Abbas and invited him for a visit to Washington.
