By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, JAN. 11. Police have launched a manhunt for the killers of Mandettira Bopanna (33), who was shot dead on the Forest Quarters Road here on Monday night.

The police said here on Tuesday that Bopanna, who was facing criminal cases, was shot at three times while he was going in his jeep to his home, in what appears to be a well-planned operation.

Bopanna visited the district hospital here last night to pay his last respects to H.T. Venkatesh (40), who died on in the evening after being hit by an autorickshaw in front of the Patrika Bhavan. Bopanna was killed while returning home.

Two teams

One of the hands of the victim was severed off, the police said. He died inside the jeep. The Superintendent of Police, Devajyoti Ray, and other senior officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Mr. Ray constituted two teams under Inspectors Lingappa and Sundarraj to arrest the culprits.

Bopanna's family members said he had been receiving threats over telephone since some months. The post-mortem was performed today and the body was handed over to the family. The cremation took place in the city.

Mr. Lingappa confirmed that old rivalry was the reason behind the murder. No arrest was made till evening on Tuesday, but the police are following definite leads.

The suspected persons are said to be at large.
