Veterinary varsity to become operational from 2006: Minister

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI. Jan 11. The Minister for Agriculture, N. Raghuveera Reddy, has said that the Veterinary University being contemplated at Tirupati would become operational from 2006.

Talking to mediapersons here on Tuesday the Minister who is also the In-Charge Minister for the district has said that that the modalities are being worked out on how the Government should go about the bifurcation of the Veterinary component from the existing Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University which now covered both the veterinary and agriculture faculties and other related disciplines. He said the exercise was being done on the basis of a resolution adopted to the effect at the recent meeting of the APNGRAU Board and pointed out that the bifurcation would cover division of infrastructure, land, teaching and non-teaching staff etc between the two faculties which all along remained together under the APNGRAU umbrella.

Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said that the exercise to bifurcate the Veterinary faculty from the APNGRAU and go in for an exclusive university for the same was being done to give it the due recognition it deserved.

He said that many other States in the country also were following the same pattern.

Milk chilling plants

Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said that the Government also proposed to set up three or four milk chilling plants in the district with the help of the National Dairy Development Board.

Mr. Reddy defended the move saying that it was necessary to save the milk producers of the district from the clutches the private dairy managements. Mr. Reddy said 2,600 acres have been earmarked for distribution to the landless in the district as part of the Government's programme scheduled to go on stream on the Republic Day.
