TIRUPATI, JAN. 11. Divergent views emerged among various State Road Transport Undertakings on fleet replacement, while they agreed to adopt a uniform policy, vis-a-vis spare parts supply. The two-day meet of the standing committee (technical and stores) of Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU) concluded here on Tuesday. M.V.Nagavender Rao, the panel's chairman and also the Executive Director of APSRTC, chaired the session. While some States change their fleet once in six years, there are some which go for replacement after 10 years and it was this wide gap that the meet wanted to narrow down. However, the panel felt that uniformity could not be arrived at on this front, given the variance in geographical and operational factors prevalent in various States and hence it was resolved to take the discussion to a "wider forum'' by asking the Pune-based Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) to conduct a workshop to issue suitable guidelines to the States.
Sample testing
On procurement of quality spare parts, the meet decided to get the samples tested at select technical laboratories for the finer flaws or metallurgical incongruities, instead of mere visual inspection. While Eicher Motors, a manufacturer of minibuses, which has diversified into passenger buses, gave a demonstration on its features, Tata Motors presented its wide-based vehicle and Ashok Leyland introduced its new variant with a better suspension system.
