ANANTAPUR, JAN. 11. Heated exchanges between councillors and officials over the alleged misuse of Swarna Jayanti Shahari Tozgar Yojna (SJSRY) funds marred the special meeting of the Municipal council at Dharmavaram in the district on Tuesday. The issue was raised by the TDP councillors in the last council meet held on December 30. After a heated debate the officials had promised to place the details before a special meeting, which was held today. The municipalities had been given SJSRY funds for providing vocational training to women. The task of conducting the training classes was accorded to different non-governmental organisations. As per the project guidelines each NGO should train at least 30 women. However, a majority of the NGOs, which were given the task, allegedly did not conduct the training classes. The TDP councillors alleged that the civic authorities and the NGOs had connived to swindle the funds meant for women training. Councillors belonging to the TDP, CPI, co-option members and the Municipal Commissioner had heated exchanges over the issue, but to no avail as the details of the scheme were not tabled.
Tempers rise
Tempers rose so high that the councillors tried to attack each other physically at one point of time. But they were pacified by the officials and other members. The Commissioner, Ajay Kishore, kept mum over the allegations all through and failed to give the details to the meet. The council, at last, adopted a resolution seeking a probe into the alleged misuse of SJSRY funds in the civic body. The council also issued a show cause notice to the town project officer, Ramalingaiah, for his failure to give the details. Vexed with the members' behaviour the Chairperson, K. Kanchanna, left the meeting mid-way. Meanwhile, the TDP councillors shouted slogans against the Chairperson alleging that he was shielding the officials as he too was colluded with them.
