MPDOs told to form teams on food for work scheme

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, JAN. 11. The Joint Collector, Shashibhushan Kumar, today warned Mandal Parishad Development Officers (MPDOs) against grounding any work under the National Food For Work (NFFW) programme without the administrative sanction from the district Collector.

At a review meeting here, he said there had been instances of taking up works without the consent of the Collector in the past and wanted MPDOs to form two teams of officials in each mandal for conducting two gram sabhas for identification of works and beneficiaries from January 18. The gram sabhas should be held preferably in Scheduled Castes or ST localities, he suggested.

Special meetings

Special mandal parishad meetings should be conducted on January 28 to ratify the proposals received at the sabhas and the proposals should reach the Collector by January 29 evening. The Collector would give sanction to the works by February 1.

The works should be completed by March 30, the Joint Collector said. Urging mandal officials to give publicity to the gram sabhas, he said beneficiaries who would be provided wage work should be given Rs. 100 minimum wages per day.

For the current year Rs. 18.5 crores was sanctioned and a minimum of Rs. 12.5 crores should be spent by March-end, he noted. Only 40 per cent of the estimated cost of an intended work would be used for material component. Remaining would be 45 per cent rice and 15 per cent cash.

Engineers cautioned

Meanwhile, the Minister for Panchayat Raj, J.C. Diwakar Reddy, has cautioned engineers against diversion of NFFW rice. At a recent meeting, he made it clear that engineers would be held responsible for diversion of rice after it was released to executing agencies.

If beneficiary workers fail to draw rice even five days after issuing the coupons, the matter must be looked into, the Minister said.
