Fresh package for fishermen

Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JAN.11. The Pondicherry Government has announced a fresh package for people affected by the tsunami.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said a total of Rs. Rs 43.29 crore would be distributed to the fishermen to purchase boats and fishing nets.

Besides, two homes will be opened in Karaikal to shelter 37 children orphaned in the tsunami. The government will give Rs. 5 lakh each to the children.

Mr. Rangasamy also announced a solatium of Rs. 50,000 each to 41 women who lost their husbands in the tragedy.

`Relief underway'

The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said here today that the administration was going ahead with relief works, providing funds to repair boats and fishing nets pending grant of central assistance.

Mr. Rangasamy told newspersons here today that he had visited Karaikal on Monday to select housing sites for fishermen. Some temple land had been identified for the purpose. The houses will be ready in a year.

A number of voluntary organisations and agencies had expressed willingness to construct houses for the displaced fishermen if sites were made available to them, Mr. Rangasamy said. Sixteen villages in Karaikal region had been affected by the December 26 tsunami.

When his attention was drawn to the plea of political parties that an all-party meeting should be convened to discuss rehabilitation programmes, the Chief Minister said everything was going smoothly without any complaint and hence the question of holding such a meeting did not arise immediately.

The Chief Secretary, C. S. Khairwal, will participate in a meeting convened by the Centre tomorrow in New Delhi on the formulation of schemes for the tsunami-affected villages here. The Lt. Governor M. M. Lakhera, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan and the Welfare Minister, M. Chandirakasu accompanied the Chief Minister on his visit to Karaikal.
