Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 11. The Mayor, Rajana Ramani, and her party colleague and Visakha-II MLA, Saripalli Rangaraju, had a wordy duel on Tuesday over construction of fish market here at Pitanidibba. Both of them engaged in an angry exchange immediately after launching work on construction of Kargil stupam on the beach road. A galaxy of dignitaries, including the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, and the district Collector, Praveen Prakash, remained mute spectators when Ms. Ramani and Mr. Rangaraju expressed their differences in public over construction of the fish market on a revenue land at Pitanidibba. While the Mayor defended the decision to construct a fish market by providing pucca infrastructure to fishermen by the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, Mr. Rangaraju said that there was no meaning in going ahead with construction when the site in question would be acquired by the authorities for widening road. The MLA also challenged Ms. Ramani to give it in writing that it would not be acquired for road widening before commencing work on the fish market. The Mayor, however, told him bluntly that there was absolutely no need to give such an undertaking.
Court order
Trouble started when a handful of fisherwomen gathered at the proposed stupam area to urge the Mayor and the Collector to sort out problems with regard to construction of the fish market. Its market construction was suspended some time ago following a stay obtained by the management of a church. The church located behind the fish market site had developed cracks after digging of earth for laying the foundation. ``Though we have made efforts to know the exact reason why the work has been stopped, none is giving any reply,'' alleged the secretary of the Fishermen's Youth Welfare Association, T. Sankar. He said fishermen would stage dharna if the problem was not resolved immediately.
