Farmers hopeful of good samba crop

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR, JAN. 11. With three days left for Pongal, mud pots and sugarcane have arrived here for sale.

Farmers are hopeful of a good samba crop (harvest has already begun in some areas) after three years of drought.

Kuruvai was raised only in pumpset-irrigated areas this year and with a good monsoon and release from Mettur, farmers had taken up the samba and thaladi on 1,36,000 hectares in the district.

Though heavy rain damaged the samba crop, the damage was not much in Thanjavur compared to Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

According to a woman who sells pots on Medical College Road, the big ones are priced at Rs. 50 a piece while the small at Rs. 40.

Clay utensils (satti) used for preparing sambar and other curries are priced between Rs. 15 and 25. Sugarcane crop was damaged only marginally.

Sugarcane bundles have arrived from Thirukattupalli, Thiruvaiyaru areas in Thanjavur.

They are sold at Rs. 70 a bundle (of 10).
