Plan to increase high breed livestock population

By Our Staff Reporter

PERAMBALUR, JAN.11 . An exclusive scheme to increase high-breed livestock population through artificial insemination programme is being implemented in the district, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, has said.

Inaugurating a special camp for improving reproductive efficiency of livestock at Chettikulam near here today, he said the Veterinary Department had fixed a target of 19,000 high-breed heifer calves through 1.02 lakh artificial insemination during the current financial year. So far, 79,000 artificial inseminations had been administered leading to birth of 11,000 heifer calves.

He said a survey conducted by the Veterinary Department revealed that the livestock in the district was often affected by diseases especially ovarian cyst, metritis and under-developed genetalia. These diseases had an adverse impact on the reproductive capacity of cows and buffaloes. So, the department decided to launch special camps to improve the reproductive efficiency of the livestock.

Similar camps would be held at Ilandaikoodam in Tirumanur block, Arumbavur in Veppanthattai block, Sendurai and Veppur this month.

The Collector said that a sum of Rs.32.5 lakhs had been sanctioned for construction of buildings for five sub-centres, which have been upgraded as dispensaries, at an outlay of Rs.6.5 lakhs each. The work would commence shortly at Ammapalayam in Perambalur block, Nakkasalem in Alathur block, Kandakudi and Poyyur both in Ariyalur block and Gangaikondacholapuram in Jayamkondam block. The sub-centres were identified for upgrading based on large population of livestock in and around these villages.

The Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, W. Jayakumar Samuel, said hormonal treatment was available to cure ovarian cyst, while anti-biotic drugs would be administered for healing metritis. He asked the farmers to ensure proper nutrition of cows to avoid the incidence of disease caused by under-developed genetalia.

Earlier, inaugurating a free veterinary camp under the `Special Livestock Protection' programme at Kalpadi village near here, the Collector said about 95 camps had been conducted in the district so far during the current financial year as against the target of 120. About one lakh livestock had been treated for various diseases.
