CUDDAPAH, JAN. 11. The Telugu Desam Party State secretary, S.V. Satish Kumar Reddy, and eight others were on Tuesday remanded to judicial custody till January 25 by the Cuddapah First Additional District Magistrate, D. Lakshmi. Their bail petition was posted for Wednesday. The others who were remanded are Yeddula Siva Reddy, Penabolu Lakshminarayana Reddy, Chowdam Chowdaiah, Derangula Prasad, Bhomanna Rami Reddy, T. Veeraiah, Avulakonda Venkata Narayana Reddy and Derangula Srinivasulu. The Vempalle police had registered a non-bailable case under Sections 147, 447, 427 and 149 IPC read with Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, after last night's clash between Congress and TDP activists at Vempalle. The police had fired 10 rounds in the air to quell the clashing groups on a row over construction of sheds on Zilla Parishad land. Our Hyderabad Staff Reporter adds: The Telugu Desam Party has criticised the "high handed action" of the police in roughing up Mr. Satish Reddy and party workers when they were staging a demonstration against demolition of petty shops at Vemapalle falling under Pulivendula -- the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's constituency. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the TDP leaders, M. V. Mysoora Reddy and S. Venugopalachari, said the "over action" seen in the way the police beat up Mr. Satish Reddy, smashed the glass windows of his house and the car, smacked of political vengeance. All this was in the presence of the Cuddapah District Police Superintendent and it was done as if to please the Chief Minister.
`False cases foisted'
They said false cases under non-bailable sections were booked against Mr. Satish Reddy, while not a single case was filed against the Congress leader, N. Thulasi Reddy, who wanted these shops to be demolished. There was nothing wrong in the TDP workers' demonstration, as they were fighting for the just cause of petty shop owners, who had obtained court order favouring them. They demanded withdrawal of cases against Mr. Satish Reddy and restoration of the place to the shop owners. The party has decided to send a fact-finding committee comprising B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, Nagam Janardhan Reddy, S. Venugopalachari, Shobha Nagi Reddy and R. Seetharama Rao, former Inspector-General of Police.
Water release sought
At a separate press conference, the TDP MLA, Narendra Kumar, charged the Government with failing to release water for second crop under Nagarjunasagar Right and Left Canals. Though there was plenty of water, the Government was unable to release it illustrating its mismanagement. It was strange that the Government after failing on this front was now speaking of linking the Godavari with the Krishna.
