Velugu teams assess tsunami damage

NELLORE: Four teams constituted by the `Velugu' authorities are busy evaluating the damages caused by tsunami disaster in the shore areas of Vakadu mandal. The teams will cover nine coastal villages.

Meanwhile, contributions have been pouring in from different parts of the district. In Kavali, councillors have donated Rs. 25,900, a month's salary, to the victims. In Bitragunta, construction workers of Chenchulakshmipuram, have donated Rs. 3,700.

CPI district meet

NELLORE: The district conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) will be held at Sullurpet on January 20 and January 21. Several State leaders are expected to participate in the deliberations. The conference is being held after a gap of three years and there will be a big public rally at Sullurpet on the evening of January 20. Meanwhile, the Nellore rural conference of the party will be held at South Mopur, on Wednesday, under the presidentship of the district secretary, P. Dasaratharamaiah.

Drip Irrigation reviewed

KURNOOL: The Collector, Vikas Raj, reviewed the implementation of drip irrigation in the district at a meeting of officials here on Tuesday. He said the scheme should be promoted in 22 mandals where water resources were limited. Farmers of horticulture crops should be advised to go for drip irrigation while sprinklers should be used for crops like groundnut and sunflower, he said. He said a plan was drawn up for undertaking drip irrigation on 5,000 hectares and sprinklers on 1900 hectares.

Two hurt in accident

NELLORE: Two persons were injured in a collision between a van and an autorickshaw. They have been admitted in the Government Headquarters Hospital. In another incident, a person was seriously injured when a slab in a house collapsed in Wood Complex area.

Gurukul school admissions

NELLORE: Applications have been invited for admissions into Gurukul schools in Gandipalem, Tummalapenta, Venkatagiri, Doravarisatram and Kota areas. Applications will available till January 31 and should be submitted by Janaury 31.

Special train for Vizag

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway is running a special train between Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam to clear the Sankranthi holiday rush. The special train No. 704A will leave Secunderabad at 9 p.m. on January 12 and reach Visakhapatnam at 11.05 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, it will leave Visakhapatnam at 7.30 p.m. on January 13 and arrive Secunderabad at 9.45 a.m. the next day.

The special train, consisting of eight sleeper coaches, an AC II tier and an AC III tier coach besides four general second class coaches, will have halts at Kazipet, Warangal, Khammam, Vijayawada, Eluru, Tadepalligudem, Nidadavolu, Rajahmundry, Samalkot, Annavaram, Tuni and Anakapalle.

Health varsity admissions

HYDERABAD: The third and final round of counselling for admission to BPT, BSc (medical lab technology) and BSc (nursing) courses will be held at NTR University of Health Sciences on January 19 and 20 respectively.

Candidates should report at 9 a.m. Selected candidates should submit original certificates along with a DD for Rs.3,300 (drawn in favour of the Registrar payable at Vijayawada) on the day of the counselling. The vacancies will be displayed at website http://ntrhs.ap.nic.in on January 17, according to a press release issued by the university.

CITU flays Centre on PPF

HYDERABAD: The CITU State committee on Tuesday criticised the Centre's decision to scrap the Public Provident Fund Scheme and demanded its continuance.

S. Veeraiah, general secretary, in a statement issued here, said by taking the decision on the PPF, which was beneficial to the middle classes, the Centre appeared to be forcing them to opt for the new pension funds.

Naxal couple surrenders

Srikakulam: The CPI (Maoist) members -- M. Harikrishna, alias Srikant (40) and his wife Swathi Biswal alias Sithakka (from Orissa) surrendered to the police at a mela at Palasa near here on Tuesday.

The Superintendent of Police, Y. Nagi Reddy, was present.

Harikrishna was an accused in 20 cases and carried a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs on his head. The reward on Sithakka was Rs. 50,000. Harikrishna joined the People's War in 1995.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nagi Reddy claimed that surrender melas by the police were yielding good results and such melas would continue.

Fisherman succumbs to injuries

Kakinada: Malladi Chandraiah (42), a fisherman of Lakshmipathipuram village of Thallarevu mandal, who was caught in tsunami and injured when his boat overturned near Hope Island, succumbed to injuries in hospital here on Tuesday.

Piracy racket busted

ELURU: The police on Tuesday busted a three-member gang indulging in video piracy. Yandra Nagavenkata Naresh Kumar of Rangoon Meda street, Pogotta Hanumantha Rao of Chintachettu veedhi and Lakshmipuram Hariprasad of Padamara veedhi were arrested.

The police also seized 38 CDs of the latest movies and 400 pirated cassettes from the accused. Besides, two computers, one Central Processing Unit, scanner, printer and sound box were also recovered.

Vajpayee calls up Naidu

HYDERABAD: The former Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, spoke to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on telephone on Tuesday and expressed his sorrow at the death of the latter's mother, according to a TDP spokesman. A steady stream of political leaders and others called on the Telugu Desam president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at his residence on Tuesday to convey their condolences to him on the passing away of his mother.

They included the actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, the Rural Development Minister, D. Srinivas, the BJP leader, Ch. Vidyasagara Rao, the Congress leader, P. Upendra, the TRS MLA, Narayan Rao Patel, the senior advocate, S. Ramachandra Rao, and the film personality, D. Suresh.

`Bhoomi puja' for Kargil `stupam'

VISAKHAPATNAM: The `bhoomi puja' for a `stupam' in memory of Kargil heroes was performed here on the beach road on Tuesday. It was jointly performed by the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, the Mayor, Rajana Ramani, and the District Collector, Praveen Prakash.

Former TDP MLA dies

HYDERABAD: P. Vengal Rao, former Telugu Desam MLA from Kavali constituency in Nellore district, died here on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 61 and is survived by wife and four sons. He was legislator from 1983 to 1985.

The Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, condoled his death and recalled his services to the party and for the development of Nellore district.

Freedom fighter passes away

KHAMMAM: A freedom fighter and Gandhian, Gella Kesava Rao, passed away in the town on Tuesday. He was 86.

Kesava Rao was a leader respected by all political parties and all communities in the district. He was instrumental in promoting various service organisations.

Dry weather continues

Hyderabad: The weather continued to be dry in the State on Tuesday also. The minimum temperature fell in Telangana, at one or two places in coastal Andhra and changed a little in Rayalaseema.

The lowest minimum temperature for the 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning was recorded by Adilabad at 12 degree Celsius. The weather will be dry on Wednesday also, according to forecast by Met office.
