Transfer Kanchi cases to CBI, says Venkaiah Naidu

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN.11. The former Bharatiya Janata Party president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, today demanded that all the cases relating to the Kanchi Sankaracharyas, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation in the "interests of fair play and justice."

This demand had been made going by the recent developments and the Supreme Court's observations (while granting bail to Sri Jayendra Saraswathi), Mr. Naidu told presspersons at the headquarters of the State unit here.

The rationale behind the demand was that the CBI would be able to deal with the cases in a "more effective manner."

A request could also be made to the Central agency for concluding the case at the earliest.

Describing as "highly condemnable and unacceptable" the latest arrest of Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, the BJP's former president said: "The entire episode is turning out to be an assault on the institution of the Kanchi Mutt."

Uring the Central and State Governments to respect the sentiments of people and take appropriate action, he said on such "sensitive and emotional" issues, that too concerning the people occupying high positions of institutions, "the police has to be extra-careful. That has been the practice."

Mr. Naidu said his party was watching the developments "including what is happening in courts" and decide what to do in future at the national level.
