JD(U) leader quits post

By Our Special Correspondent

PATNA, JAN. 11. The Janata Dal (United) national general secretary, Tanvir Hassan, MLC, today quit his post to protest against the party's alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party for the Bihar elections. He said the JD(U) leadership was not respecting the sentiments of the party workers.

In a message to the party president and National Democratic Alliance convener, George Fernandes, Mr. Hassan accused him of imposing his preference on the party and entering into an understanding with the BJP, without taking into consideration the fact that people regarded it as a communal outfit.

Party workers had underlined the need to reconsider the party's relations with the BJP. He regretted that the workers' call had been ignored because Mr. Fernandes had a soft corner for the BJP.

He alleged that the leadership had lost an opportunity to strengthen the JD(U) and win the confidence of the minorities. Mr. Hassan threatened to quit the party if the worker's aspirations were ignored further.
