One killed in fire

Nagercoil Jan. 11 . One person was killed in a fire mishap at Nagercoil on Tuesday.

According to the police, the godown of a private parcel service office was gutted. The police also recovered the charred body of a man identified as Pachaiyan (52) of Aralvoimoli. They could not ascertain how fire broke out in the godown.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.

CPI cadres stage demo

TUTICORIN Jan. 11 . Communist Party of India (CPI) cadres today staged a demonstration at Kovilpatti, urging authorities to supply adequate water to the residents of Kovilpatti.

Shops closed

TUTICORIN Jan. 11 . About 345 shop-owners at Kayalpattinam downed shutters today, condemning the revenue authorities' decision to shift the sub-registrar office at Kayalpattinam to Tiruchendur.

The police said the situation at Kayalpattinam was peaceful throughout the day and no untoward incident was reported from there.

rape case

TUTICORIN Jan. 11 . The police are looking out for Patchamal for allegedly raping a 41-year-old woman at Vilathikulam in the third week of December last.

The police said Patchamal dragged the woman to a nearby forest and raped her.

The Vilathikulam police are investigating.

Relief materials arrive

THANJAVUR JAN. 11. A train carrying relief materials worth Rs. 5.5 crores from Punjab arrived here this evening.

The materials, meant for the tsunami victims of Nagapattinam, were sent by Surjit Singh Racada, a member of the Punjab Assembly, and his two brothers. A 35-member medical team also came in the train. It will visit the affected areas in Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Kanyakumari district.

Festival season fares

CHENNAI JAN. 11. Emirates Airlines has extended its special festive season fares till March 31 on its recently launched Chennai-New York service, through Dubai.

Economy and business class passengers can avail themselves of the discounted return fares of Rs. 45,160 and Rs. 1,40,650. Passengers travelling on first class are offered a return fare of Rs. 2,62,905.

Mr. Abdulla Nasser Abdulla Hussain, vice-president, India and Nepal, said the carrier now operated four flights from Chennai to Dubai.

Bakrid on January 21

CHENNAI JAN. 11. The Chief Kazi to the State Government has said Bakrid will be celebrated on January 21. In an official release, the Kazi, Dr. Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub, said the new moon for the month of Zulhaj was sighted here on January 11.

EMU service to Tirupati

CHENNAI JAN. 11 . Southern Railway will operate EMU service to Tirupati from Chennai from tomorrow.

The service, now running between Chennai Central and Tiruvallur, will be extended to Tirupati. It will depart Chennai Central at 7.05 p.m. and reach Tirupati at 11.05. It will leave Tirupati at 4.45 a.m. and reach Chennai at 8.45 a.m. The Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, will inaugurate the service.

The timings of the Pondicherry-Tirupati Passenger will be revised between Arakkonam/ Renigunta and Tirupati. The train will leave Arakkonam at 7.45 p.m. instead of 8.45 p.m. and reach Tirupati at 10.15 p.m. instead of 11.15 p.m.

From January 14, the following changes will be made in the EMU services in the Chennai-Arakkonam/Renigunta section: TRA-4 leaving Tiruttani at 9.40 a.m. will be extended up to the Moore Market Complex (MMC) and renumbered as TAM 6A. It will reach the MMC at 11.55 a.m. MA 23 MMC-Arakkonam leaving the MMC at 8.10 p.m. will be extended up to Tiruttani and renumbered as MAT 13. It will reach Tiruttani at 10.30 p.m. ATR 5 between Arakkonam and Tiruttani has been cancelled.

An additional pair of diesel electric multiple unit will be operated between Katpadi and Tirupati. The train 216 will leave Katpadi at 9.15 p.m. and will reach Tirupati at 00.15 a.m. In the return direction, train 215 will leave at 2.50 a.m. and will reach Katpadi at 5.45 a.m.

Guwahati Special

Train 207 Bangalore-Guwahati special will leave Bangalore at 11.55 p.m. on January 12, leave Chennai Central at 10 a.m. on January 13 and reach Guwahati at 2.30 p.m. on January 15. Reservation is available for the special train.

Mettur discharge reduced

NAGAPATTINAM JAN. 11. The discharge from the Mettur dam for Cauvery delta irrigation was reduced this evening to 10,125 cusecs from 11,560 cusecs last evening.

The level stood at 72.72 feet (full level 120 feet) with an inflow of 352 cusecs this evening. The storage was 35.08 tmcft (full capacity 93.4 tmcft). From the Grand Anicut, Cauvery, Vennar, Grand Anicut Canal and Coleroon were getting 1,200, 5,839, 1,500 and 962 cusecs.

TNOU exams put off

CHENNAI JAN. 11. Owing to the recent Tsunami, the Tamil Nadu Open University has postponed the undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate and management exams. The last date for sending in filled-in applications and the exam fee is also extended up to January 20. Students who have lost their identity cards can write to the university for a duplicate.

Examinations scheduled for January 22 have been postponed to February 5; examinations to be held on January 23 will now be held on February 6; and those slated for January 29 on February 12. Similarly examinations to be held on January 30 will be held on February 13; and those to be held on February 5 put off to February 19. There is no change in the venue or time. Exam results

CHENNAI JAN. 11 . The results of the teachers certificate (painting, tailoring and Indian music) examination, held in September 2004, have been announced. The certificates can be collected from the centres from January 13, an official release said.

Three ADGPs await posting

CHENNAI JAN. 11. With two more Additional Directors-General of Police (ADGPs) being put on compulsory wait a few days ago, the number of ADGPs awaiting posting has increased to three.

On December 6, the then Chief Vigilance Officer of Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Jagan M. Seshadri, was shifted and in his place, S.P. Mathur, another ADGP, was posted. Later, S.V. Venkatakrishnan, ADGP (Crime), and Vibhakar Sharma, who was ADGP (Administration), were also moved out. No posting was given to the three officers yet.
