Rain plays spoilsport

KOLKATA, JAN. 11. There was no play on the opening day of the East Zone Ranji one-day tournament owing to overnight rain and a smart shower on Tuesday morning leaving the two venues — Eden Gardens and Jadavpur

University Salt Lake Campus — unfit for play. The matches were called off by noon and four teams — Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam and Tripura — were awarded two points each.

Splitting of points would certainly have benefited Jharkhand against Bengal and Tripura against Assam. The fifth side, Orissa, would get into action on Thursday with a match against Jharkhand while the host would play Tripura after a day of rest on Wednesday. — Our Special Correspondent
