Rain washes out first day's play

KOLKATA, JAN. 11. Heavens opened up preventing play on the first day of the Eastern India Open golf tournament, the 12th leg of the Amby Valley PGAI Tour 2004-05 season, at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Tuesday.

After overnight rains continued into the morning rendering the course unplayable, the tournament committee decided to cancel the first round, taking into consideration damage to the course.

The golfers would now fight it out over 54 holes (three rounds).

The cut would be applied after 36 holes with the top 50 and ties playing the sole money-making round on Friday. — Our Special Correspondent
