VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 11. Host Andhra University picked up all the three gold medals at stake on the first day of the all-India inter-university weightlifting (women) championship on Tuesday. It won one of the two gold decided till evening in the powerlifting championship. K. Nirmala (58 kg), G. Indu (48 kg) and K. Kalyani (53 kg) in weightlifting and Ch.V.S.L.N. Renuka (48 kg) in powerlifting won gold medals for AU. Nirmala and Indu recorded their personal best on their way to the gold medals. Nirmala's best lift of 77.5 kg in snatch and the total of 177.5 kg in total were better than her previous best of 75 kg and 177 kg she did at the South India championships held here in November last. Kalyani made an effort to improve her clean and jerk mark by going for 105 kg in her final attempt but could not succeed. P. Haritha brought the silver medal also to AU with a total lift of 160 kg. Indu lifted 60 kg, 85 kg for a total of 145 kg in the just concluded inter-SAI Sports Hostel meet and improved the clean and jerk mark by lifting 87.5 kg and also the total lift (by 2.5 kg). Kalyani lifted 65 kg in snatch and 90 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 155 kg. Renuka, an international powerlifter, proved her class once again with a total of 370 kg with her best lifts being 150 kg (squat), 72.5 kg (bench press) and 147.5 kg (dead lift). Santoshi Majhi of Pt. Ravishankar University, Raipur, won the 44 kg gold with a total lift of 312.5 kg (120, 52.5 and 140).
