Rare surgery performed at Parumala hospital

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 11. The doctors of the St. Gregorios Cardio-Vascular Centre, Parumala, Mannar, today claimed that they had simultaneously done aortic valve replacement and repaired interrupted aortic arch on a patient at the hospital recently.

At a press conference here, Johnson George and Sumitran, cardiologist and cardio surgeon, said surgical correction of these defects on a patient, who was over 60 years, was done for the first time in the world. They said only 12 such cases had been reported in the world so far.

The doctors, who were in the team that performed the surgery, said that when Saharban Beevi, 62, arrived at the hospital, she complained of difficulty in breathing during exertion.

Preliminary investigations revealed narrowing of aortic valve. Examinations revealed the condition of interrupted aortic arch, the doctors said. She was now recuperating in the hospital.

The surgery proved that even hospitals in rural areas could successfully compete with foreign hospitals in performing cardiac surgeries, they said.

The team of doctors that performed the surgery included Rameshwar Talya, R. Saji and Shibu Johnson, said Dr. Sumitran.

The whole procedure was done under the guidance of Dr. K.M. Cherian and Dr. Ashok Sharma, he added.
