KRRS to rally behind vegetable growers

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JAN. 11. The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) will take up with the Government the issue of vegetable growers and greengrocers being "ousted" from markets in Dakshina Kannada.

To start with, it will take out a rally in the city along with the Mahila Tarakari Belegarara Mathu Talehore Maratagarara Sahakari Sangha on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference with representatives of the sangha here today, Sunny D'Souza, general secretary of the KRRS district unit, said his organisation is convinced that vegetable growers, who often also sell their produce, are being systematically pushed out of the Central Market area here. Officials of the Mangalore City Corporation and some politicians have connived to oust them out of the market, he added.

Noting that the move will rob many people of their livelihood, he said the KRRS has decided to support the sangha. Vested interests in the Central Market area and other markets in Mangalore have divested vegetable growers and greengrocers of their space in the market, he added.

Demonstration

He said the KRRS will also hold a demonstration on the Central Market premises and disrupt business for a day. A memorandum will be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner asking him to take steps to set up "Raitha Bazaars" in the district, he added.

Mary Machado, president of the sangha, said that apart from pushing vegetable growers out of the market, some agents are also forcing them to sell their produce at a cheap price to them.

Of late, the contractors have stopped collecting market toll from us to make a case against us that we are unauthorised to operate from the market premises, she added.
