MANGALORE, JAN. 11. Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) burnt an effigy of the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh, at PVS Circle here on Tuesday to protest against the Centre's proposal to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in higher education.

Guruprasad, secretary of the ABVP city unit, said allowing FDI in higher education will commercialise the sector.

He said the Government should chalk out a national policy for admission to professional colleges in the country. If necessary, it should enact legislation in this regard, he added.

He said the Government should also look into the plight of poor students and ensure that they are not left out.
